Herb Goldman, a pioneer in the modern art movement, has 94 commissioned works registered with the Smithsonian
Institution’s Inventories of American Painters and Sculptors. This Web
Site is full of images, descriptions and current information on
Goldman's exciting sculptures. Goldman's commissioned sculptures are
throughout the US and extend to Africa. They grace public and
private spaces from office buildings to institutions. Goldman was trained, in the classical European style as an apprentice and assistant to internationally known sculptor, Samuel A. Cashwan, of Detroit, starting at age 12. He was introduced to WPA art projects and the birth of the modern art movement at an early age. Goldman learned the foundry process when he was young, and continues to cast many of his own sculptures using a cold cast "bronze" and "aluminum" process. Foundries in Texas and Arizona are also casting Goldman's sculptures in stainless steel and bronze. Herb Goldman obtained his degree in Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico. After serving in WWII (awarded the Air Medal), he was part of the post war Albuquerque Art Renaissance movement and was commissioned for many years as "the sculptor", to do one-of-a-kind projects. Goldman was a primary pioneer of and contributor to the "50's modern" style, which contemporary architectural critics refer to as "Googie". After WWII astounding and brilliant variations were made based on the classical age of modern art and many contemporary artists were born. Goldman played a part in this historical and creative revolution. Several of these works can be viewed in the “Early Work” section of this site. While he has long been known for large-scale architectural and environmental sculptures, including some of the first natural habitats for zoo animals, he continues to work in a variety of media and sizes. In more recent years Goldman has been working on non-commissioned sculptures available in limited editions. Goldman takes pride in his flexibility as a sculptor and an artist, creating sculptures in naturalistic, figurative, stylized, abstract and representational styles. His recent works range from animal art or wildlife art (Polar Bear), representational and abstract art depicting cosmic events (Cosmic Incubator series), to classical nude art (Female with Mirror). He creates free standing sculptures, relief and wall-mounted sculptures. Goldman's recent sculptures can be viewed in the "Catalog" and " Current Works" sections.
Goldman
continues to create and cast his unique and timeless art.
